Opportunities to learn

May 20, 2013

I received a very thoughtful Thank You email from a student in my lecture class this semester. In the email, the student said that I was one of the best instructors she’s had in her three years at UT and articulated a few aspects of our class that stood out to her as significant:

  1. Second chance exams
  2. Student feedback was incorporated into class structure and activities
  3. The instructional team was welcoming and approachable

Certainly pedagogy is important and there are more and less effective instructional strategies but I am struck by the fact that the three aspects mentioned in the student’s email all boil down to providing students with opportunities to learn/display their understanding and valuing student ideas.
